Wonderful story, good values!
We love all of her books and buy them 1 at a time as we can afford them. In an age of big in your face pop up books and childrens books that make your eyes hurt these books are a wonderful find. As always the illustrations are beautiful - I read all the reviews first but few had actual specifics about the actual invdividual stories, so that's what I've done here. I hope it helps others know what wonderful books they are. I wish they were easier to find in Canada. Anyhow this book is about pelle a swedish boy who had a lamb of his own. As they both grow Pelle's clothes get too small. So he shears off all the sheeps wool and takes it to his one grandmother and asks her to card the wool for him. In exchange she needs her carrot patch weeded which he does for her. Then he takes it to his other grandmother and asks her to please spin the wool into yarn which she does in exchange for him tending her cows. Then he asks the painter for some dye to dye the yarn. He asks him to take the row boat over to the store for some supplies and offers him the change to buy his dye there. Then he dyes the wool himself and hangs it to dry. He asks his mother to weave the yarn into cloth for him which she does as he watches his little sister for her while she does it. He then takes it to the tailor and asks him if he will make a suit for him...since the tailor needs his hay and wood brought in and his pigs fed. Pelle does that for him, the tailor makes his suit, on Sunday Pelle puts it on and thanks his lamb very much for his suit! Heartwarming tale!!!

Beautifully illustrated tale of a resourceful Swedish boy
The illustrations alone make this book a prize in any child's library, but the story is wonderful as well. Pelle shows resourcefulness, confidence and integrity as he swaps his talents for those of others in order to have a new suit made from the wool he has shorn from his sheep.

Great Story
I bought this for my sons 6th birthday and he has read it every day since then-that is 1 1/2 months ago. Great reading-no villains-just one hero-Pelle

A good way to learn pattern drafting
This is a good book to begin learning pattern drafting. It focuses on female attire and was originally written in the 1950s. The designs reflect this. However, if you combine this basic knowledge with a book like Make it Your Own, by Lori Bottom and Rhonda Chaney, you will find that you can create endless original patterns -- as I have done from these books.

Essential travel accessory, Taylor Denim
Because I travel so often for work and pleasure, I try to travel light--carry-on only (if I can get away with it!) This means I have to carefully (read: agonizingly) select which clothes I am going to pack, and I cannot go anywhere without my "sexy" jeans! Not Perfect, but it Really Works!!
Much of my clothing were starting to get pills, so I was desperate to find something, anything, that would remove them- as otherwise, I would have to spend a good deal of money on a new wardrobe.

I tried peeling them off with tape, and rolling them off with lint rollers. These only removed a few superficial lints- the stubborn pills remained. I tried using a vacuum shaver. The shaver worked on some types of fabric but not others, but left holes in all of them.

Resigned to buying a new wardrobe, I brought the SWEATER STONE not really expecting anything. To my delight, it actually works!

I would not say my clothes look like new, but they look much better. Be warned, though, if your garments are full of pills, or if you are very particular in wanting to remove as many of the pills as possible, shaving with the sweater shaver can awhile. I sometimes spend a couple of hours with one very pilly shirt. But this is still far less than the time it would take to remove all these pills with my fingers (the only other method I know that really works- I also spent hours with all the other methods I describe above but they never did end up working.) Furthermore, shaving with the sweater stone leaves my garments with a fresher look than picking with my fingers as it removes a good deal of fuzz as well the pills.

A point to note however is that the SWEATER STONE is rather messy. Unlike vacuum shavers which include a collection place for the pills, and lint rollers/tape in which the pills stick to the roller/tape, the pills simply fall all over your table/floor when using this device, along with crumbled bits of the stone itself. I recommend shaving with the SWEATER STONE on top of newspapers away from fans, wind, etc. Or, be prepared to do a bit of cleaning up afterwards.

So, all in all, not a perfect product, but I am quite satisfied.

To get an even fresher look, use a lint roller or lint brush after using the sweater shaver to remove any overlying lint/fuzz that remain after using the shaver.

Better than a shaver!
I am actually writing this review based on using the sweater stone my mother bought years and years ago. After moving away from home, I missed hers so much I am buying my own. Just gently rub it across the surface of pilled fabric, and it restores a smooth newer look. This works much better than any sweater shavers I've tried and will last for years with no batteries required. Consumer Reports also gave it a "Best Buy" rating.

I will add that it does have a slight odd odor while you use it, but that does not affect the clothes. You also will want to use a lint roller to collect pills and lint once you're done. I've had one synthetic stretchy sweater it didn't work on, but it's been great on most things, including pilly sheets.

Amazing
These stones restore almost any fabric. They work so well on fleece, wool or even the most delicate of fabrics. Anything that pills will be restored to knew. I honestly just wish I had learned about these sooner

OK, but I would not want my daughter to follow this fashion advice
What I really appreciated about this book is how upbeat and affirming this book is. Marlene Wallach is constantly encouraging girls to smile, to be stylish without spending a ton of money or copying their friends, to be proud of their body. I also thought it was good how the book tried to encourage girls to write about their fashion ideas, and create fashion diaries. Anything that will get kids to write is a good thing.

I'm not as crazy about the focus on skinny girls. Wallach does address the issues of larger girls in one short section, but very briefly and superficially. All of the young models in the pictures are thin and do not seem to reflect a good cross-section of real-life young teens.

Also, (and I'm probably reflecting my un-hipness here), most of the fashions shown in the pictures just look stupid to me, with mismatched articles that no real girls would wear. For example, a pink sleeveless tee with a black prom dress with green polka-dot leggings with red sunglasses with black-and-white striped fingerless gloves. Please!

I also don't think that enough ink was given to the topic of "developing your own style." It's clear that the real "style" pushed is that of funky, colorful pieces worn in crazy configurations. A girl drawn to goth, for example, would be subtly disparaged by this book, which puts down black clothes. Similarly, girls with a more preppy, country-club style would possibly feel marginalized by this book, which constantly encourages mixing textures and styles of clothes.

Finally, I just didn't think the book went far enough in terms of helping girls get a handle on what is a reasonable wardrobe. The assumption throughout the book is that girls are practically swimming in clothes, and there are tips on hunting through the back of your closet for treasures, organizing your multitudes, and swapping your extras with your friends. But if this is really the case, then I think it would have been nice if she had addressed the question of what girls really need. Just buying into the idea that it is totally normal to have far too many clothes (such that you "forget" what you have) is really not doing girls any favors.

Overall, I'd call this about as deep as a typical magazine article. Not really offensive, but not particularly impressive either.

Not a good fit for a pre-teen just learning about style
I requested this book hoping it would be a good fit for my pre-teen daughter. She is starting to experiment with outfits more, and could use some practical guidance on mixing colors, patterns, seasons, etc.

But this book trends "funkier" than I was hoping. It is about creative exploration. Which is great, in theory. But if you're looking to help your daughter figure out that black tights don't work with a gauzy floral sundress - this book isn't going to do it. In fact, it will give her more ammunition for her arguments that dusty pink plaid and lime green really can look great together.

It's a good book for my daughter......
This book more than adequately covers the essentials of good style and fashion sense, as well as tips on hygiene, shopping, care of clothing, being prepared for what each day may bring, clothing-, stress-, and other wise.

This is a good addition to the pre-teen girl's personal library, and would actually carry her through her college years and beyond.

A girl who read and followed the advice herein would feel more secure about herself; my only question is (and this is really not the author's problem!), how many pre-teen girls would "listen" to a book rather than to their friends?

Grab bag...buyer beware
Everyone needs to be sure to read the words "Grab bag" and "slightly irregular" and understand what you are getting. Out of 6 pairs I had 2 that we a little more than "slightly irregular", still wearable, they just look like they were sewn by a blind monkey. Also there are some pretty radical patters/colors on the "mostly white" socks, so if you need them to be white for any reason this is probably not the pick for you. Overall, a good price for the product.

Best Socks!
These are the best socks. I train for triathlons and play soccer. After using these socks, I will not go back to cotton socks. I do not get any blisters, they are comfortable, very durable, and fun! If you do not mind getting random colors and designs, these are the best socks you can get to run or ride your bike. In addition, they are not expensive at all.

Solid vest... I'm wearing it right now!

This is my second photo vest, the first had too much mesh/"rip stop" that- while lightweight- meant it got snagged and actually ripped quite a bit. I was looking for something a little heavier, and this vest is made of a more "solid" heavy khaki. It is not physically heavy, though and the vest sits well on the shoulders. The waste snaps also help keep the vest tighter to the body so your equipment isn't swinging around on the vest.

I'm a news videographer, not a still photog (though I use a DSLR in my spare time). I can tell you that the lens pockets on this vest won't hold larger "L" type lenses, so this proobably isn't for the pro photog. They would easily hold the canon EF-S line like the basic 15-55mm or even the 70-300mm, but again, any of your 70mm wide lenses aren't coming with you in this vest (however, they are great for holding lav and stick microphones... score one for audio/video!). Also, the eppalets- while a nice idea- are not going to accomodate a 'real' camera strap as the loop on the shoulder is only about an inch wide. Still if you were carrying some other item on a string and you didn't want it around your neck, these would work... and if you still use a real camcorder, don't worry, the snap does not dig into your shoulder when you're shooting.

The vest is still taking some getting used to as it is not left-right simmetrical (my last vest was). The filter pockets are good for smaller items and the pockets along the breast/chest easy accomodate mini-maglites, multitools and other at-hand items (the left front pocket with the diagonal zip is an interesting "fast access" touch that I'm already digging). This vest also features a good number of pen pockets, something probably every profession could use. The final really good aspect of this vest is the large rear pocket. This is a good pocket for a light raincoat/poncho, cables, batteries or more tapes if the inner pockets don't do it for you.

This vest is right for my job, eliminating my need for an extra bag of gear. For those of you in EFP/ENG, I recommend this.

Campco Humvee Vest
I dont have this vest yet but plan on buying it. Just wanted to let the other reviewer and others know that the Campco vest has changed its name to Humvee, so it is one and the same.

Few days later...

Just received the vest. It has over 20 pockets including a large pocket on the back which is not pictured. Great vest for photographers and field biologists alike.

I got it primarily for biological field studies. Now I have a place for everything: kill jars, aspirator, pocket net, collecting jars, compass, GPS, maps, pens, pencils, spade, notebook, field guides (large enough front pocket for "The Sibley Guide to Birds"!), and more...

I use the back pocket to shove a rain coat in. The epaulets and raised neck portion come in handy for carrying binoculars or camera around your neck (a feature that is lacking in all of the field vests that I have been browsing).

A lot cheaper than other field vests yet has just as much or more room.

I had to return the original safari vest for a smaller size. The seller promptly refunded the original purchase and quickly shipped the replacement vest. A good experience and a good product.
